Dr. Johnson completed his medical degree at the University of Arizona College of Medicine before completing his psychiatry residency and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Arizona. Today, Dr. Johnson maintains a near full-time private practice in Tucson, where he sees both children and adults. His professional journey has also included significant leadership within the field of psychiatry. Dr. Johnson previously served as Chief of Psychiatry at the Arizona Community Protection and Treatment Center at the Arizona State Hospital and has held an Assistant Clinical Professor position with the University of Arizona Department of Psychiatry. His experience in these settings has allowed him to remain closely connected to both patient care and the education of future mental health professionals.
Education has remained an important part of Dr. Johnson’s career. He has taught medical students and psychiatry residents and has lectured on topics including child and adolescent psychiatry, psychiatric treatment, forensic issues and ethics. He has also shared his expertise through presentations for medical and mental health professionals across the country.
Dr. Johnson has been deeply involved with the American Psychiatric Association and the Arizona Psychiatric Society, taking on numerous leadership and committee roles throughout his career. He served as President of the Arizona Psychiatric Society and has participated in national APA committees focused on professional education, practice guidelines and psychiatric aspects of violence.
His contributions to the profession have earned recognition over the years, including Fellow status in the American Psychiatric Association and Life Fellow status in 2022. He was also named Arizona Department of Health Services Employee of the Year in 2009.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Johnson continues to bring his experience, knowledge and dedication to the patients he serves in Tucson.
