Dr. Cruz began her academic journey in healthcare by earning a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 1988. Demonstrating an early commitment to service and cultural engagement, she spent a year teaching English in Bangkok, Thailand prior to entering medical school. In 1989, she formally embarked on her medical career at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California, where she developed a strong foundation in clinical medicine and patient care.
While in medical school, Dr. Cruz participated in a student and staff physician medical relief team that provided care to native communities along the Amazon River, an experience that helped shape her commitment to service-driven medicine. She earned her medical degree in 1993 and completed her Internal Medicine internship under the U.S. Navy at Naval Hospital Oakland in California.
After the hospital’s closure, Dr. Cruz completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1996, she was deployed to Guam to fulfill her U.S. Navy service commitment, serving as a Staff Internist at the U.S. Naval Hospital. During her active-duty service, she received multiple honors, including the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the National Defense Medal for her service during Operation Desert Storm. In her final two years in Guam, she also served as Head of the Internal Medicine Division.
In 2000, Dr. Cruz returned to the University of California, San Francisco to complete fellowship training in Gastroenterology. She relocated to Arizona in 2004 to join the Arizona Medical Clinic in Peoria, where she practiced full-time gastroenterology in both outpatient and inpatient settings, providing comprehensive care including endoscopic procedures and hepatology services.
Dr. Cruz joined Estrella Gastroenterology in Goodyear, Arizona in January 2007 and opened her own practice, Dr. Liz Cruz Partners in Digestive Health, in January 2008. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Orlando, Florida, she is fluent in Spanish and values strong patient relationships. Outside of medicine, she enjoys time with her family, traveling, jazz music, and photography.
Dr. Cruz is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology, and is an active member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
